Autism and the Hidden Curriculum! Social Interactions, Body Language, Unwritten Rules...

Help is on the Way!

The "Hidden Curriculum" refers to the many social rules that are not usually taught but that most people "just pick up" and learn by observing.

Many of the hidden curriculum topics can be humorous, but breaking one of the rules can make a person a social outcast by their peers.  (birthday parties, bathroom rules, body space, school, social interactions, clothing, slang terms, on and on...)

One of the biggest steps for successful INCLUSION (school, community, work environments, family) is for students to understand and learn strategies for the hidden curriculum.

Objectives:

*Identify hidden curriculum rules and the expectations embedded in social situations

*Learn some tips on how to build social success

*Explore (and leave with) some strategies for WHAT and HOW

PARTICIPANTS WILL REVEIVE THE BOOK:  THE HIDDEN CURRICULUM: UNDERSTANDING UNSTATED RULES IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS FOR ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS  (Myles, Trautman and Schelvan)
