The Texas Literacy Achievement Academy for Grades K through Grade 5 will focus on providing effective and systematic instruction to implement the TEKS in English/Spanish Language Arts and Reading and the English Language Proficiency Skills (ELPS). Teachers will collaborate with colleagues in hands-on activities as they
- learn how to integrate research-based strategies for the five components of reading instruction (Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension) into their daily reading and writing instruction;
- use explicit instruction as they practice these strategies;
- incorporate these strategies into the reading program they use every day with their students;
- differentiate instruction to meet the needs of English language learners and students who are struggling with learning to read; and
- use assessment information to make instructional decisions.
Academy participants are asked to bring their reading program’s teacher’s edition, a narrative and an expository children’s book.
