Brains, Behavior, and Belonging: Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools

This professional development session is designed to help K–12 school personnel build a deeper understanding of how trauma-informed practices can transform the learning environment and lead to improved outcomes for all students. Aligned with Texas Education Code (TEC) §38.036, this training meets the state requirement for professional development in trauma-informed strategies to support the mental health and academic success of students impacted by grief and trauma.
During this session, participants will explore the research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), the definition and impact of childhood trauma, and how stress and fear responses manifest in student behavior and learning. Educators will gain practical knowledge of the core attributes of trauma-sensitive schools and how to embed trauma-informed care within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. By engaging with these concepts, school personnel will leave with actionable strategies to foster safe, supportive, and responsive environments that promote resilience, healing, and academic achievement for every student.
