Adaptive Literature: Creating Accessible, Age-Appropriate Texts for Learners with Complex Access Needs




This interactive professional learning session is designed for special education teachers who support students with complex access needs in inclusive or general education settings. The focus will be on how to adapt age-appropriate literature found in the general education classroom so that all learners can access, engage with, and respond to it. Participants will explore how to use low- and mid-level assistive technology tools (for example: picture symbol overlays, switch accessible page turners, voice output devices, simple scanning & reading apps) to provide multiple means of access and expression. As a culminating project, each teacher will design and create an adapted book specifically tailored to the needs of one or more learners in their classroom. All materials and templates will be provided by ESC Region 19. Teachers will leave with a ready-to-use adapted book, ideas for assistive-technology implementation, and a plan for embedding the adapted texts into the student’s daily literacy routine.

Objectives: 
1.Identify challenges students with complex access needs may encounter when engaging with age-appropriate texts in the general education classroom (e.g., decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, physical access, expressive response).
  • 2. Select appropriate low- and mid–level assistive technology tools to support access (reading, writing, page navigation) and communication (response, presentation) for these students.
  • 3. Adapt an existing age-appropriate text (modify text, add symbols/pictures, adjust format, provide alternative access modes) so that students with complex access needs can meaningfully engage with it.
