Nontraditional Points to Ponder when Teaching Individuals who Present as Nonverbal Communicators




Often, we are given the charge to provide instruction for students who are nonverbal, resulting in complicated delivery of instruction because the student’s traditional verbal expressive and receptive communication systems are limited and/or void.  This session will address how direct-service providers must learn to recognize/listen to the student using alternate forms of communication, rather than spoken language, like (but not limited to), gestures, guttural sounds, movement, eye-gazing, repetitive behaviors, vocalizations, etc. How the information is interpreted will impact the outcome.

Session Time: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify specific strategies to enhance recognition of
when a student (who is nonverbal) uses non-traditional expressive/receptive communication to express basic needs/convey emotions. 

2. Participants will be able to recognize and match specific levels of behavior escalation (by an individual who is non-verbal) to specific pro-active, de-escalation techniques with emphasis on safety, ownership, accountability.
 
3. Participants will be able to infuse and implement specific techniques for communicating with, teaching for, and learning from individuals who are considered nonverbal with any of their pre-existing classroom/behavior and/or pro-active intervention practices.
