Promoting Resilience for Children Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing Through Family-Centered Practice
Cook Children's Webinar (Nov. 2019)

In this highly interactive workshop participants will examine “What is adversity? Trauma? Culturally Responsive Practice? Restorative Practice” to describe and define both sources of adversity and the impact on child development. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey will be presented to evaluate those sources of adversity and trauma which impact children who are DHH and their families. Participants will consider the impact of this lived experience on children and families, through both neuro-developmental and family systems approaches. The presenter will define and describe “Resilience” and “restorative practices” before presenting a Framework of Effective Practices and Strategies to Promote Resilience. Participants will consider how learner adversity is considered, or not, in their own service delivery by exploring examples of the systems designed to support learners with hearing and communication difficulties.  The audience will discuss and reflect upon opportunities to influence family resilience in patient/client interaction with coaching and restorative practices.  Using case scenarios, participants will practice applying effective practices. Individuals will  create a personal improvement plan and identification of systems-level opportunities to better promote resilience for the children and families they serve.
