The Drawing A Blank Guided Tour is a full-day workshop presented by award-winning author Emily Iland, M.A. The user-friendly, hands-on and interactive event is highly suited for professional development, and is also ideal for parents. The workshop is based on an extensive study of the existing research and literature on this topic. In the “Guided Tour” ESC 19 provides each participant with a copy of the book Drawing A Blank: Improving Reading Comprehension for Students with ASD. Participants will learn to use evidence-based and promising practices to improve comprehension for students on the spectrum. Participants become familiar with the material in the book and can use it as a resource after the training event.
Learning Objectives: This presentation focuses on readers with ASD who decode well but do not understand what they read. The material can be applied to readers across the spectrum, and may also help struggling readers who do not have ASD.
Participants will: 1) Understand how the features of Autism Spectrum Disorders affect comprehension
2) Identify more than 30 skills to teach explicitly
3) Learn evidence-based and promising comprehension strategies to help readers who struggle to understand what they read
